On August 20th, 2009 Southern
Ontario experienced a large tornado outbreak. About a dozen or
so tornadoes were spotted and several of them did considerable
damage, especially to the towns of Durhan and Vaughan. I was
chasing the storm that produced the tornado in Vaughan, but it
is very difficult to chase in an urban area like the Toronto
suburbs during rush hour. The storm got away from me and by the
time I caught up with it again, it had already damaged hundreds
of homes in Vaughan. The tornado was later ranked as an F-2.
There were no serious injuries
in Vaughan, but there was one fatality reported in Durham. On
this day, Ontario recorded the same number of tornadoes that
touch down on average each year!
