Full Body Stunt Burn

Yes, that's me... ON FIRE!!

As part of the preparation for my National Geographic expedition to go down inside the Darvaza flaming gas crater in Turkmenistan, I wanted to be sure that I would be comfortable around fire. The way I decided I was going to accomplish this was to hire a professional stunt man Randy Butcher to teach me how to do a full, Hollywood style body burn. I did two of these burns, for a total of 60 seconds of burn time. No, I'm not going to tell you how to do this. Do Not try this at home.

On fire. It was a very cold night, so part of me really wanted to bring on the flames! The location for the burn was at the headquarters of One Axe Pursuits, in Elora, Ontario. At one point, the flames completely wrapped around me. I'm actually facing the camera in this shot. It was a bit scary to get a face-full of fire, but I just kept on walking. Again... Earlier in the day, we also tested the fire resistance of my aluminized heat suit.
