Mosquito Bay on Vieques Island
is home to the most bioluminescent water in the world. The microscopic
dinoflagellates that live in the water glow whenever they are
disturbed which means that every splash creates a wondrous glowing
aura around whatever is moving in the water. It is believed that
the light is the plankton's defense mechanism.
Anything that touches the water
will glow, this includes boats, fish, stingrays and people.
The wake stirred up by the boat's outboard
motor giving off an eerie glow.
The water is not only safe to swim in but
it is a fantastic experience. If you remain perfectly still, the
glowing stops but as soon as you move, you become surrounded with
greenish light.
