- Since 2008, the Halema'uma'u
crater at Kilauea has held an active lava lake. The authorities
have the area blocked and I didn't want to go through the blockade
and get into trouble, so I had little choice but to photograph
it from the lookout point at the Jaggar Museum. Normally, I prefer
to get a LOT closer.
The Halema'uma'u Overlook is closed, as are hiking trails that
lead to the crater. Crater Rim Drive is closed between the Observatory
and Chain of Craters Road because of sulfur dioxide gas emissions.
