Irazu Volcano

Costa Rica - Dec, 2008

  • Irazu is an active volcano and is the the highest volcanic peak in Costa Rica. It's most recent major eruption was in 1963, the very day that U.S. president John F. Kennedy arrived in the country on a diplomatic visit. That eruption lasted until 1965. There is some concern that the north side of the crater may one day collapse, possibly causing another major eruption.

Irazu is above the clouds most of the time, making viewing easier than most Costa Rican volcanoes.
