Deception Island Volcano

Antarctica Nov. 2018
Deception Island is an island in the South Shetland Islands archipelago, with one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. This island is the caldera of an active volcano, which seriously damaged local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. The island previously held a whaling station, and still is home to several scientific outposts, with Argentine and Spanish research bases.

I visited Deception Island as part of an Antarctic trip I was taking aboard the maiden voyage of the recently recommissioned RCGS Resolute.

A gentoo penguin walking in the steam along the warm beach at Whaler's Bay.
These penguins seem to enjoy the volcanic steam from the hot, volcanically heated water under the sand.
Zodiacs bringing people back and forth from ship to shore, anchored in the volcanic steam.
