Deception Island

South Shetland Islands, Antarctica - Jan. 2009

  • Deception island is an active volcano and also the site of a former Norwegian whaling station. The whaling station was abandoned during the great depression and several volcanic eruptions and landslides have taken their toll on the remaining buildings. The last significant eruption was in 1969 which destroyed 2 Chilean research stations.
