F-4 Tornado

Kansas City - May 4, 2003

We narrowly missed a tornado in Leavenworth, Kansas. As we emerged from the rain, pieces of fiberglass insulation were still falling from the sky. Just missed it !!! Further east, the supercell thunderstorm continued and passed over metropolitan Kansas City. It produced another tornado, this one rated F4. Our view of the tornado was blocked by hazy skies, trees and buildings. On our portable television we could see live footage of the tornado being shot by a local news helicopter. We could even see the chopper out the car window but we were never able to actually see the tornado ourselves as it plowed through the city. This was extremely frustrating but it's difficult to chase in densely populated areas.

Here's some of the damage in Kansas City.
