Steam rising off of Lake Ontario

Frigid cold temperatures make for a surreal sunrise in Toronto
With morning low temperatures of -22C with a windchill of -35, this was the coldest morning in Toronto in nine years. I was up early, hoping to catch some steam devils forming on Lake Ontario, but unfortunately it was too windy. A steam devil is a type of vortex that forms in cold air over a warm body of water and they take on an appearance of a mini-tornado. The wind was too strong for these vortices to form, but the wind did drive some substantial waves up against the ice along the lake shore.

It was so cold that my camera equipment started to fail and even my tripod started to freeze into one solid mass of metal.
