Dog sled used to be the only
way to travel great distances in the Canadian far north and they
are still used today. Mushing has become a very popular activity
with visitors to the Yukon and many outfitters will takes people
out for extended dog sledding adventures. Of course, I had to
give it a try.
These dogs love to run and they
get really excited when they see the sleds getting ready.
With the long cold winters up
here, the spots where the dogs like to pee turn into elaborate
ice sculptures.
The dogs are not vicious, they
just want to hit the trail. They bark like crazy until they get
moving, then it goes totally silent.
A typical sled with an eight
dog team at the ready.
Once they have their harness
on, it's running time even in extremely cold temperatures. this
day was well into the -30C range.
