- The forecast for Ontario today
was looking very favourable for tornadoes so I blasted north
of Toronto to see what I could find. The terrain is difficult
with lots of hills and trees, so I figured my best bet for getting
a good view was to position myself somewhere near Georgian Bay
on Lake Huron. There was one storm that had formed out ahead
of the incoming line of storms, and I tried to catch it, but
as I got close, I ran out of road options near the town of Coldwater.
-
- Backtracking, I decided to
head to the water's edge to get a good view of the approaching
line of storms. Environment Canada issued tornado warnings for
the entire line, and the concern became the threat of circulations
embedded in the line, which would be difficult to spot that discrete
storms. Mark Robinson from The Weather Network called me because
he knew I was nearby, and I told him about the great vantage
point I found right on the water in the small town of Waubaushene.
-
- That's where we waited for
the storm to overtake us. We were treated t an impressive shelf
cloud, and as it approached, the winds from the gust front really
kicked up, blowing us around and whipping up whitecaps on the
lake. Mark was doing live hits on TWN, and we knew we didn't
have long before the rain reached us. We dashed back to our cars
as it began to come down in buckets! The winds shifted around,
and looking at radar, we confirmed that there was at least some
rotation close to us in the storm.
