5000 people were killed here
in 1994, many of them women & children.
The skulls of the victims lined
up along the walls of the former church.
These shelves of skulls kept
going on and on, it was emotionally difficult to visit this place.
Bones piled high. A chilling
reminder of what happened here.
In 1994, while the rest of the
world turned a blind eye, a million people were killed in Rwanda
in only 100 days. This ethnic conflict between the Hutus and Tutsis
culminated in a massacre of Tutsis that is almost incomprehendable.
At this one site alone, 5000 people who gathered at the church
for safety were slaughtered as the building was surrounded by
Hutus brandishing machetes and grenades. These images may be difficult
to look at but I believe that we must remember what has happened
in the past to help prevent this kind of violence from ever happening
again. Rwanda is such a beautiful country with friendly people,
I can't imagine how it ever got so bad there.
