Explosive Blasting at Crazy Horse Monument

South Dakota

The Crazy Horse monument is the largest sculpture in the world. It's being carved out of a solid granite mountainside using dynamite, jackhammers, drills & bulldozers, all without government funding. I was lucky enough to be able to get up onto Crazy Horse's arm and stand beside his giant head. It'll be many, many years before this monument to all native people is completed.

To put its sheer size into perspective, the giant faces of Mount Rushmore could all fit in the space taken up by Crazy Horse's head!

It is being built "To show the white man that the red man has great heroes also"

The blasts they did the day I was there took about 1200 tonnes of rock off the mountainside, yet it looked like only a scratch.

You can get an idea of the size of this project by looking at the cars & construction buildings beside the head. The miniature sculpture in the foreground shows what it'll look like when the project is finally complete.
