A terrible crash has left one man dead, another in hospital and
nine Special Investigations Unit officers scouring a closed road
for answers following an early morning police chase in the city.
Cops were pursuing what they
believe was a stolen vehicle heading southbound on Victoria Park
just after midnight Tuesday. That's when a black Acura lost control
and crossed the centre line colliding with a gold Nissan Maxima
which was traveling northbound. The impact was so severe it sent
the Acura through a wooden fence of a nearby home at the corner
of Victoria Park and Howard, near St. Clair.
The driver was removed from
the car and taken to hospital with vital signs absent and was
later pronounced dead. The driver of the Nissan was trapped in
the wreckage before being rushed to Toronto East General Hospital.
He's expected to be O.K. The Acura wound up on its side on the
grass eventually bursting into flames, but luckily fire crews
were quick to extinguish the blaze. Meanwhile, the Nissan sits
as a tangled mess on the street, mute testimony to the devastating
force of the impact.
Because of the police involvement,
the SIU has been called in to probe the incident. Their presence
means cops can no longer talk about what happened, and the road
will remain closed through the morning rush and beyond as experts
reconstruct the scene. |
